How To Keep Your Home Warm This Winter

November 10, 2014 by lucas in Tips, Utilities

With winter fast approaching many of us are starting to think about how we’re going to survive the colder months. It is no secret that the cost of heating our homes is on the rise – which leaves many of us with bills that we can’t afford. Finding heating costly doesn’t mean that you have to freeze this winter. Instead, you need to be more savvy about heating your home!

Be Practical

When it comes to heating your home you have to be sensible. If you’re going to leave the heating on all day then the bill at the end is going to be huge. Instead set times that your heating can come on. Make sure that you keep all of the doors in your home closed as this will help keep the heat in. Choose curtains for your rooms that are thick and keep these closed. Putting tin foil behind radiators can also help to reflect heat back into the room. If your radiators are not performing as well as they could then get these changed.

Make Changes

Just because you have always used a particular energy supplier that doesn’t mean that they are giving you the best deal. Spend a little time researching energy tariffs and see if there is a better option for you to swap  to. It might also be worth talking to your existing provider to see if they have a better deal that you could be on. Even if you can only save a few pounds a month this will make all the difference. If you get a good deal then try to lock in for a set up as this could help save you money over a number of years.

Swap Fuel

We’re lucky to be in a position where new technology gives us options when it comes to heating and powering our home. It is well worth looking into different options to see what could work for you. Oil heaters or solar panels on the roof could make all of the difference. These products often have an initial outlay you need to put out to get started but you soon start to notice a difference. Government websites, Ingoe Oils and energy saving forums all offer help and advice on this. It can be a scary prospect when it comes to signing up for something new like this. However, the difference you’ll see in your bills makes it well worth it.

Get Advice

The important thing to remember when it comes to needing to budget your heating is that you are not alone. In fact, more people are struggling with this than you could imagine. You should research to see if there are any local companies or charities that offer help and advice with this. They might be able to give you ways to heat you home more efficiently or sign up for any government payouts that you could be entitled to apply for.
